Term Notes

Year 1 – Term 3 2022

It has been good to have the children back after the Christmas holiday and we hope that you were able to have a good break with friends and family.  With our History topic of ‘Kings, Queens and Castles’ and our exploration of ‘Polar Places’ in Science, we anticipate another term of exciting learning and exploration.

In English, we will be looking at adventure narratives, based on the stories of Oliver Jeffers, as well as recounts. Our daily phonics regular sessions will continue to focus on blending and segmenting real and nonsense words. Please continue to support your child with reading at home, ideally at least five times a week. On a Friday, we will continue check the number of reads and those children who have read five times in a week will be given a raffle ticket, and the chance to win a book of their choice.

This term, we will start issuing spellings, on a fortnightly basis.  They will be given on a Friday and tested two weeks later.  Please look in your child’s Reading Record for scores and new spellings. On the alternate weeks, the children will be given a Maths challenge, based on number bonds to 5 or 10.  They will have 2 minutes in which to get 20 correct. Again, your child’s Reading Record will contain stickers with their scores and the number bonds that they need to practise, so watch out for those.  The children only move on in Maths challenge once they get 17, 18 or 19 per 20/20.

As usual, we will communicate with yourselves through the Home Reading Record, so please check it regularly throughout the week. The Home Reading Record will only be handled by staff once a week, on a Friday.

In Maths, we will continue our work on  addition and subtraction, as well as place value with numbers up to 50. We will also be looking at time. Please continue to practise ordering numbers and number bonds to 10 and or 20 with your child to help with their mental maths development.

Our Science topic of ‘Polar Places’ will look at animals that live in the Artic and Antarctica. We will be carrying out a number of investigations using scientific vocabulary and developing questioning skills.

In History, we will be learning about some British Kings and Queens, as well as how castles have changed over time.

Our Art theme of developing Art skills and our computing theme of ‘we are digital artists’ are closely linked.

In RE, we are looking at the importance of family within Judaism.

On PE Days, please can children come to school in their PE kit – this should be weather appropriate, and will limit time spent changing. Please can you ensure that all items of clothing are named (especially school jumpers and cardigans, as well as PE hoodies), as we have had quite a few incidences of missing items which could not be returned to their rightful owners!  Please note the change in days for Bumblebee and Dragonfly class, which will be for this term only.

PE Days:

Bumblebee Class: Monday and Thursday (This term only).

Dragonfly Class: Monday and Thursday (This term only).

Ladybird Class: Monday and Friday.

Children should bring in a bottle of water each day. Please make sure bottles are named and have a sports cap to prevent spillages.

We will continue to aim to communicate with your through our year group blog, and if appropriate, messages on classroom windows. If you have any concerns or issues that you would like to discuss, please come and talk to us, preferably after school.

Thank you for your continued support,

The Year 1 team.
