Term Notes

Year 1 – Term 5 2022

Welcome back to school everybody, and the start of the Summer term! We hope you all had a very enjoyable Easter holidays. The following term is jam-packed with lots of fun learning opportunities for the children and we are excited to get started!

In English, we will begin exploring narratives from other cultures. The children will gain a rich knowledge, through stories, about what life is like in other cultures, including the traditions they follow which may differ from our own. For the second half of the term, the children will be learning about the features of non-fiction newspaper reports, and how to write their own. Our daily Phonics sessions will continue to take place, where the children will continue to learn new sounds, segment and blend to read words and spell those tricky common exception words. Please continue to support your child with reading at home, ideally at least five times a week. On a Friday, we will continue check the number of reads and those children who have read five times in a week will be given a raffle ticket, and the chance to win a book of their choice.

Please continue to look in your child’s Reading Record for their spellings and number bond challenges. These are conducted on alternate weeks. We will share your child’s score in their Reading Record as well as the new challenge that they need to practise at home with you.

This term in Maths, we will be covering multiplication by using repeated addition and arrays, division and fractions including 1 whole, haves and quarters.

In Science, we will be learning about plants typically found in the UK. The children will be learning about the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees, as well as how to identify different types of trees, wildflowers and leaves.

This term, we will continue to have weekly Geography lessons, this time with a focus on learning about our Local Area.

In Art we are going to be looking at landscapes, and specifically creating and re-creating artwork using a variety of different media.

In RE, the children will be learning about different places in Christianity.

On PE Days, please can children come to school in their PE kit – this should be weather appropriate and in line with the school’s uniform policy. The children have one session a week outdoors, and one session a week indoors. With the weather warming up, children may need suitable sun hats to wear during their outdoor PE sessions.

PE Days:

Bumblebee and Dragonfly Class: Tuesday and Thursday

Ladybird Class: Monday and Friday

Children should bring in a bottle of water each day. Please make sure bottles are named and have a sports cap to prevent spillages. On hotter days, children will also need sun hats (named). We also ask that you apply sun cream to your child before they come to school. If you feel they will need a top-up of sun cream at lunch time, you are welcome to send in a named bottle of sun cream. Please make your child aware that the sharing of sun cream is not permitted due to possible allergies, and we as adults cannot help them to apply it – they must apply it themselves.

We will continue to communicate with you through our year group blog, and if appropriate, messages on classroom windows. If you have any concerns or issues that you would like to discuss, please come and talk to us directly and we will be happy to help.

Thank you for your continued support.

The Year 1 Team.
