Primary School

Week One Done!

Well done to all of our Year 5 children for an excellent first full week back at school!

It has been a busy start to the school year however all the Year 5 adults are so impressed with how well the children have got starlight back into the school routines and have adjusted to life in Year 5.

In Maths, the children have been consolidating their understanding of numbers up to 10,000 through solving various reasoning tasks and problems. This week, the children will move onto extending their knowledge of numbers up to 100,000 and will read, write, compare, order and round numbers with 5 digits.

In English, the children have recapped the features of instructions and have practised analysing instructional texts to find these features. The children have also completed some shared writing explaining how to build an Egyptian pyramid! This coming week, the children will research the process of mummification before planning and beginning to write their own independent instructions.

Linked to this, in History the children have placed the Ancient Egyptian civilisation on a timeline and have ordered some Ancient Egyptian events in chronological order. This week, the children will be learning more about the River Nile and will start to understand why so many Ancient Egyptian settlements were located near the river. Feel free to ask the children about some of the 'gifts' of the River Nile!

We have also started our learning all about Space - the children have practised naming the planets in order. Again, feel free to test them on this! Over the next few weeks, the children will also be learning how to say the planets in our French lessons too!

All of the children should have come home on Friday with a list of spellings stuck into their reading records. Spellings will be tested on a Thursday with new spellings given out on a Friday. Please contact your child's class teacher if you have any questions about this.

Just a reminder, both Year 5 classes have P.E. on a Tuesday and a Friday.

Thank you for your support.

The Year 5 team.
