Year 4 Home Learning – Monday 13th July 2020

Hello! We have reached the final week of the academic year. This week we are going to work on a project – All about bees! By the end of the week, we would like you to be able to answer the following questions:

Why are bees so important?

What are the different types of bees?

Why are bees declining?

What can we do to help the bees?

Please choose some of our ideas to complete during the week. You can complete as many or as few of the tasks as you like. If you have any other ideas, then please feel free to do them too!

1. Create a mind map about bees.

Can you answer the following questions?

  • What do bees look like?
  • How many different types of bees are there?
  • Why do we need bees?
  • What would happen if we didn't have any bees in our world?

2. Look up the definitions for the following “bee” words:

  • Insect
  • Species
  • Colony
  • Nectar
  • Pollen
  • Pollination
  • Swarm

3. Label the body parts of a honey bee.

Try to label:

  • Antenna
  • Legs
  • Compound eye
  • Wings
  • Abdomen
  • Thorax
  • Pollen basket

4. Complete a “bee watch” – This could be completed in two different ways.

  • A bee watch over one week – Go out for 10 minutes every day and count how many bees you see. Make sure you go to the same place at the same time each day.
  • A bee watch over a day – Go out for 10 minutes every hour during the day and count how many bees you see. Make sure you go to the same place each time.

A "bee watch” works best in an area with lots of flowers!

5. Taste some honey – Can you think of some amazing adjectives to describe the taste and texture? If you can get hold of some different jars of honey, why don’t you try a little bit of each one. You could get your family members to try some too and record their favourite.

6. Create a food diaryThink about what you ate for breakfast this morning. Was it toast and jam? Fresh fruit? Cereals? Fruit juice? What about lunch?

List all the food you eat that is brought to us by bees. Remember that bees will have played a part in pollinating the vegetables and fruit we eat.

7. Watch the following video - Create a piece of persuasive writing or a persuasive poster to persuade people to help save the bees! Try to include some interesting facts!

8. Complete some bee arts and crafts – Look at the art and craft PowerPoint for some ideas

We will be posting some more ideas on Wednesday!

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We would love to see what you have been doing, so please continue to send us your work! Remember to let us know if you would like any photos uploaded onto the Year 4 gallery.
