Fire fighter visit

As part of our work on The Great Fire of London the local fire fighters came to visit us in school.

Today Y1 were able to have a good look at the fire engine and see how all the equipment was stored. It is very different to any tools they had over 350 years ago in 1666!

We all had a go at working the hose - they nearly ran out of water.

We also learnt about how to keep safe from fires in 2019, and Fire Fighter Dave gave us some homework to go and count the smoke alarms in our homes - and to get our parents to test they are working! He explained it was important to shut the doors in our house at night. if ever our smoke alarms did tell us there was a fire we now know to get out of the house and to ring 999.

We discussed how our houses are very different from the wooden houses of London and of course we have an efficient fire service now. Does your child remember how many people died in the Fire of London?

Later in the week we will be making models of the Tudor houses and then next week and hopefully be able to recreate (safely) how the fire spread.
