Summer Term 5 Notes 2021

Already we have reached that time in the year where the days become longer and warmer. The Year 1 team hopes everybody had an enjoyable Easter and is well rested for a fun and busy term. We will be looking at different sorts of trees, their leaves and plants within our Science topic as Summer arrives.

Computing - we will be building on our knowledge of programming by beginning to use the programming software ‘Scratch’.

History - exploring history within living memory of ourselves, parents and Grandparents. Looking into how toys, technology, and transport have changed over the last 100 years.

During our PSHE sessions we will be discussing different relationships and how we treat and look after our friends and families.

In English, we will be reading stories from other cultures and using these stories to help us continue to form interesting sentence with a clear beginning, middle and end.

As you may have noticed your child has been given a Maths challenge to practise with in their reading diary. We will be testing the children on their number bond knowledge fortnightly. On those alternative weeks the children will be tested on their spellings, which like the maths challenge, will be given out a week before your child is tested. Every Friday your child home reading diary will be looked at to count home reads, of which 5 or more reads need to be recorded so that your child can be given a raffle ticket to put into the draw of winning a book at the end of the term. Please check your child’s Home Reading Record regularly throughout the week as this will be where any work your child needs to do at home will be –The Home Reading Record will only be handled by staff for spellings, maths challenges and reading checks only.

In Maths, we will be focussing on multiplication and division. Looking at different mathematical language involved and methods we can use to group and share using objects and pictures. As well as practising our problem solving skills, to read, understand, calculate, solve, answer and check answers. We will also be continuing with 10 minute maths where we will pre-teach mathematical areas such as time and sequencing which we will be teaching in term 6 as well as re-capping place value and counting.

In PE we will be starting our ‘Jumping Jacks’ gymnastics unit and our ‘Moving Letters’ dance unit. On PE Days, please can children come to school in their PE kit – this should be weather appropriate, and will limit time spent changing, as well as limiting risk. Bumblebee Class: Monday and Friday

Dragonfly Class: Tuesday and Friday

As the warmer days are just around the corner please ensure that your child brings in a bottle of water each day, that they are named and have a sports cap to prevent spillages.

We aim to communicate with yourselves through our year group blog, and if appropriate, messages on classroom windows. As we are all still living through difficult times, if there are any changes, please bear with us, and we will share them with you as soon as we can.  If you have any concerns or issues that you would like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to e-mail use on the e-mail addresses provided on the school website.

Year 1 team.
